Nate Bargatze was an unconventional choice to host the Halloween 2023 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” But hey, the actors were still on strike, the talented comic’s standup career is taking off, and somebody had to don the George Washington wig.
The result was “Washington’s Dream,” written by SNL co-head writer Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day with an assist from Auguste White, and starring Bargatze as Washington and Day, James Austin Johnson, Bowen Yang, and Kenan Thompson as his dejected Revolutionary War soldiers. Thompson had an especially good reason to be pessimistic about America’s future.
The setting: an American army camp. The year: 1777. Bargatze-as-Washington reminds his tired troops what they’re fighting for: the right to determine their new country’s own “system of weights and measures” — one that’s independent from the British Monarchy with the added benefit of being far more random and confusing. The 4-minute,...

Romance and redemption abounded in the series finale of “The Other Two.” Though the third season of the Max comedy series saw Brooke (Heléne Yorke) and Cary Dubek (Drew Tarver) take a morally questionable turn at times, both siblings took the chance to make things right in the show’s concluding chapter.
For Brooke, that meant making a big sacrifice for her family and reuniting with her fiancé Lance (Josh Segarra). As Brooke and the family attended the Peabody Awards, where Brooke was set to win an award for her telethon for mental health awareness headlined by her brother ChaseDreams (Case Walker), a scandal erupted when Chase was caught trying to boost his album sales through the project. Controversy also swirled around Pat (Molly Shannon), after she mistakenly posted a series of tweets maligning her Ohio friends — and essentially...

Thursday’s supersized Season 3 finale of The Other Two is now officially a series finale, after Max announced the show is ending this week. But did it offer us any closure?
We begin with a flashback to simpler times, when Cary was still waiting tables with Curtis, and they enjoy a picnic in the park with food they stole from work. Brooke joins them and introduces them to Lance — who introduces them all to dabbing! But today, things aren’t so simple: Cary is still living in that tent in the park while his Method actor boyfriend Lucas is off shooting his Brokeback Mountain ripoff,...

The Other Two is ending at Max after three seasons. The Thursday, June 29 finale will be the last episode of the series. The cult favorite show stars Drew Tarver as Cary Dubek and Heléne Yorke as Brooke Dubek, the two elder siblings of teen brother, ChaseDreams (Case Walker), who became a pop music sensation overnight. Molly Shannon plays their mother, Pat. Both struggling artists, “the other two” Dubek siblings, struggle for their own fame in the comedy, which is a satire of Hollywood and the music industry. Ken Marino (Streeter), Josh Segarra (Lance), and Brandon Scott Jones (Curtis) also star. The Thursday, June 29 finale will be a clear end to the series. “It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the Dubek family after three seasons, but we always knew, both creatively and personally, that this was where we wanted to end their stories,” showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider said...

“The Other Two” will end with its third season on Max, TheWrap has confirmed.
The Hollywood satire series, which stars Heléne Yorke, Drew Tarver and Molly Shannon, will end with its Season 3 finale, which will air on Thursday. The decision to end the show came from creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, according to an individual with knowledge who spoke with TheWrap.
“It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the Dubek family after three seasons, but we always knew, both creatively and personally, that this was where we wanted to end their stories,” Kelly and Schneider said in a joint statement. “And because we are quite literally out of ways to humiliate Drew Tarver, so what’s the point? We are deeply grateful to everyone (gays) who watched the show, to Max for giving us a second home and life, and to our writers, producers and crew, who gave so much of their time,...

The Other Two, the comedy series starring Heléne Yorke, Drew Tarver and Molly Shannon, is coming to a close with its third season on Max.
However, rather than being canceled, the decision was made by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, co-creators of the buzzy comedy, who said that they have run out of ways to “humiliate” Tarver.

The move comes ahead of the third-season finale, which sees Shannon’s billionaire mogul mom Pat and her ex-lover/manager Streeter (Ken Marino) strategize how to broach difficult conversations with her kids, Cary (Tarver) and Brooke (Yorke). The episode airs Thursday,...

One of the best parts about The Other Two (there are so many!) is how funny and fun it is. And so TV Insider had to ask the cast — Drew Tarver (Cary), Heléne Yorke (Brooke), Molly Shannon (Pat), Ken Marino (Streeter), Case Walker (Chase), Josh Segarra (Lance), and Brandon Scott Jones (Curtis) — some more light-hearted questions (and one serious) about their characters when we caught up with them ahead of the third season (the finale drops June 29). As we’ve seen in the first nine episodes, there have been some highs and lows (especially the latter) for Cary and Brooke this season. “They’re hovering around their rock bottom, just kind of dipping their toe into the worst moment of their lives. And then this season, I think it becomes too much for the two of them to take, and they finally do reach full peak sadness,” Tarver noted. “I...

Heléne Yorke has one word that comes to mind when describing her character, Brooke Dubek, in the third season of the Max series, “The Other Two,” and that is insecurity. “I think that she’s displaying her truest, deepest, darkest insecurity in this season. She’s gone about things confidently, blindly and I think this season she gets existential in a way and goes down a path that she can’t get out of,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She attributes this to the wide variety of humor that show creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider bring to the show and its characters. “I would be more surprised if I was not surprised by the creators of the show. I think they are incredibly deft in the writing and their storytelling.”

Drew Tarver is not oblivious to how Cary Dubek on “The Other Two” has been going in a very unsavory direction. “I feel like Cary has always been dipping his toe in a little bit of bad behavior of finding himself giving into his desperation over the first two seasons,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But unlike where Cary was in the first two seasons, Tarver sees him losing his grip on knowing where to dial back his more selfish tendencies. “I feel like this season he’s really struggling with knowing where the line is to where he’s going, getting so self-involved that he’s hurting those around him and himself a little bit more.”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Other Two Season 3 Episode 5, “Cary and Brooke Go to an AIDS Play.”] Let us say how much we need the humor of every person groaning (but not wanting to complain) and settling in as the 8 Gay Men With AIDS: A Poem in Many Hours play takes up their lives for days in the latest The Other Two. Because with the relationships? Well, there’s a lot of heartbreak. The episode begins with Pat (Molly Shannon) and Streeter (Ken Marino) informing Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) of their breakup; they’re at different places in their lives, with her fame making any sort of normalcy impossible. Streeter, unsurprisingly, starts talking about custody and promises Cary and Brooke they have rooms at his place. Then, while Lance (Josh Segarra) sleeps during the play, Brooke, despite insisting she’s out of the industry, spends her time trying to ...

As a famous woman onscreen and off-, it’s not entirely surprising that there are moments when Molly Shannon’s life mirrors that of her The Other Two character, Pat Dubek — until she shares that those common experiences include enjoying anonymity courtesy of a disguise.
In episode four of the Max comedy, which debuts on the service today, billionaire media mogul Dubek is tired of being surrounded by security or getting swarmed by fans every time she leaves the house. After sneaking out without her bodyguards proved to be an ineffective solution, she came up with another idea: donning prosthetics and a wig that made her look like “Grandma Dubek.”
She first tests the persona while meeting her son Cary (Drew Tarver) for coffee. “See! No one can tell, Cary. It’s perfect,” she exclaims. “All I need to do is get into full prosthetic makeup every morning for four hours,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Other Two Season 3 Episode 4 “Brooke Gets Her Hands Dirty.”] Doesn’t your heart just break for Pat (Molly Shannon) on The Other Two? Pat’s become so famous — she has her own network — that she can’t go to events without being surrounded by security, can’t plan for a stroll in Central Park without days of going over protocols, and can’t be out with her loved ones on her own without being in full prosthetics. It’s while she’s in disguise at a bar that Streeter (Ken Marino) sits nearby, not recognizing her, and admits that he feels bad he told his famous girlfriend he’d be out of town so he could do things like go to restaurants and ride the subway without making her feel jealous. He even suggests she could be there in some sort of disguise, but it makes him sad to...

Among the changes glimpsed in the first two episodes, which pick up post-pandemic: Cary’s (Drew Tarver) movie, Night Nurse, is (finally) out, and he meets a method actor who stays in character for the whole shoot for every role; Brooke (Heléne Yorke) and Lance (Josh Segarra) are engaged, and now both out of the industry, with him, a nurse and her quitting; Pat (Molly Shannon) has her own network and is so famous she can’t go for a stroll in Central Park without too many protocols; Chase’s album came out on January 6; and Streeter (Ken Marino) is representing people he found on TikTok. “The Other Two” co-creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider know that the HBO Max comedy’s biggest strength comes from its hilarious and ruthless commentary on the madness of trying to make it in Hollywood. As workers in the industry, satirizing its troubles is an almost healing and cathartic exercise.
“I think the worries or fears or curiosities or anxieties or discontent that Brooke (Heléne Yorke) and Cary (Drew Tarver) have are usually based on something we’ve felt ourselves, or things that people in the writers’ room felt [working in Hollywood],” Kelly told TheWrap ahead of the Season 3 premiere. “So that is the nice thing about having a show in general, let alone a show that is about your own job, you can work through your own feelings.”
“And we really do love our jobs,” Schneider added. “For all the industry’s flaws we do like being a part of it, so...

Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith almost exactly one year ago and, Saturday night, the comedian slapped back, metaphorically speaking. But critics are also wondering if Rock’s choice of Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre for his standup special “Selective Outrage” was more calculated than it first appears – because it’s Jada Pinkett Smith’s hometown.
The Baltimore Banner’s Leslie Gray Streeter called Rock out in a column posted Sunday, saying that Rock “contradicted himself when he ended his show last night saying that he hadn’t hit Smith back last year because he was raised ‘not to fight in front of white people.’”
“Isn’t that what you’re doing, my dude, while also joking about rooting for Massa to beat Smith’s character in ‘Emancipation’?” Streeter said, referring to Smith’s 2022 historical slave drama from director Antoine Fuqua. “Didn’t you come to a Black woman’s...

SNL's Kate McKinnon Laments Nixed Farewell Sketch Proposal: 'I Didn't Get to Make Out With Everyone'
Kate McKinnon is reflecting further on her decision to depart Saturday Night Live — and her failed goal to make out with each and every one of her colleagues as part of her May 21 sendoff. (We swear that second part will make sense soon.)
In the latest episode of Vulture‘s Good One podcast, the two-time Emmy winner chokes up as she recalls telling series boss Lorne Michaels that she would not be returning for a 12th season.

Comedian Kate McKinnon revealed how hard it was for her to leave “Saturday Night Live” with some tears on Vulture’s “Good One” podcast.
“I definitely was not sure when the right time to go was,” she said when asked why she stayed with the show for as long as she did. “Leaving was in the back of my mind for a while, because it’s just a grueling schedule. I mean, I could do it for the rest of my life, happily, if the schedule were not so grueling and if I was not naturally a person who liked to wake up at 8 a.m. and go to bed at midnight.”
McKinnon performed on “SNL” for 11 seasons with nine straight Emmy nominations and two wins. She is one of the five longest-tenured cast members of the sketch comedy show.

Billy Herrera, a successful architect and the title character of the newest iteration of Father of the Bride, is played with terrific comic understatement by Andy Garcia. He has some of the gruffness of Spencer Tracy in the hit 1950 movie of the same name — the first screen translation of Edward Streeter’s novel — and none of the mugging that Steve Martin brought to the 1991 remake. But like both their characters, and pretty much every dad in every American comedy ever made, Billy needs enlightening about the way things are in the world today. When he says, “I came to this country with nothing,” which he does every chance he gets, his wife and daughters roll their eyes and wait for the moment of self-mythologizing grandeur to pass.
The shocking reality that kick-starts his awakening is news that his older daughter is getting married...

While Molly Shannon’s favorite scene for season two of “The Other Two” is in the episode where her character, Pat, has a nervous breakdown, it’s the part after that she loves. “I’m in the hospital bed and Streeter is like, I want to be there for you and do everything, and I’m like, yeah, I don’t like that. I don’t need that kind of energy,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). She elaborates that she loved how it combined her favorite kind of comedy with the most ideal scenario for shooting. “I love the combination of really funny and then touching. And it’s really fun to do a scene in bed all day, not having to stand up. If you’re going to be on the set for 14 hours, you might as well be in a bed acting.
