The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

This week, the Number One song in America is a diss track. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” debuted at the top of the charts, to the surprise of no one who’s seen the track go viral since its release earlier this month. The song is buoyed by a catchy DJ Mustard beat and a slew of unforgettably delivered lyrics by Kendrick — even if the lines are vulgar barbs toward his rival Drake.
What does the record’s success mean? For one, it highlights how desensitized we are as a music-listening public.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.

Coachella 2024 was the year of the A-list guests. Across all three days, top stars made appearances either onstage or in the crowd to support their musician besties. Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt, Will Smith pulled up for J Balvin, Justin Bieber sang with Tems, Billie Eilish threw a last-minute party at the DoLab stage, and Shakira even announced a world tour during Bizarrap’s set.
The talk among some festivalgoers ahead of Coachella suggested that this year’s lineup might underwhelm, but the number of stars joining their friends onstage surely helped with that.

The past few weeks have been great for music. With new releases from Ariana Grande, Beyoncé and more, the charts truly feel like they are alive again. Among these big releases, one of the most buzzed about has been the alliance between hip-hop superstar producer Metro Boomin and veteran rapper Future on their album “We Don’t Trust You.” It has been a huge success, debuting atop the Billboard 200 with over 250,000 equivalent album units and multiple songs in the top 10 of that week’s Billboard Hot 100, most notably the single “Like That” with Kendrick Lamar at number-one. Future and Metro’s success might translate to some Grammy prizes in 2025 too.

Ramy Youssef will host the next “Saturday Night Live” episode, airing on March 30, with Travis Scott as the musical guest. This announcement was made during the March 9 “SNL” episode, which was hosted by Josh Brolin with Ariana Grande as the musical guest.
Youssef’s upcoming HBO comedy special, “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” debuts on March 23.
This season has included a slew of hosts — some controversial. While the March 2 episode saw Sydney Sweeney in her hosting debut and musical guest Kacey Musgraves, the women followed Shane Gillis — the comedian who was fired from “SNL” in 2019 due to racist, homophobic, Islamophobic and misogynistic jokes he made on his podcast and other media.
After these comments resurfaced on social media, a spokesperson on behalf of executive producer Lorne Michaels said at the time, “We want ‘SNL’ to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane...

"If you tried to bring back Freaknik, it wouldn't be what it was." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, streaming at the end of March. This is premiering at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival in the "24 Beats Per Second" section before it hits the web. From Executive Producers Luke Campbell, Jermaine Dupri and 21 Savage, and masterfully crafted by Mass Appeal & Swirl Films, Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is a celebratory exploration of the boisterous times of Freaknik, the iconic Atlanta street party that drew hundreds of thousands of people in the 1980s and 1990s, helping put Atlanta on the map culturally. What began as a Black college cookout, soon became known for lurid tales of highway hookups and legendary late-night rowdy parties that ultimately led to the festival's downfall. At its height, Freaknik was a traffic stopping, city-shuttering,...

Everyone knows why Shane Gillis was hired, then fired, from Saturday Night Live. But since he never appeared in an episode, there were few who actually got to see why he was tapped to join the 2019 cast in the first place.
Could part of the reason have been — as we can see in the fake movie trailer for White Men Can Trump — his killer impersonation of the former president?

Shane Gillis’ meant-to-be-triumphant return to the Saturday Night Live stage this weekend was a mixed bag of humor, some of which landed with a thud — like any episode of the long-running show — and a couple of good laughs.
Much of the show’s sketches took the comedian and podcaster’s white-bro shtick and dialed it back a tad — ultimately finding a sweet spot closer to the line that his routine crosses. Gillis made a strong effort in his return to Studio 8H on Saturday night, but he struggled throughout his monologue and was visibly anxious as he pivoted to new topics. Ribbing his dad, who sat with his mother to support him in one of his bigger career moments, didn’t go over well — yes, having a dad who’s a girl’s basketball coach might be pretty funny to you, Shane, but it’s not really to everyone else.

Comedian and podcaster Shane Gillis made a strong effort in his return to Studio 8H on Saturday night, but as he acknowledged through his nearly 10 minutes on stage, many of his jokes didn’t quite land with the live audience — probably because much of his popular routine is not network TV-friendly.
Gillis, who hosts the wildly popular Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, returned to Saturday Night Live as its host five years after he was fired from the cast. In 2019, the 36-year-old was abruptly sacked when racist and homophobic jokes he made on his show surfaced.
His return to the long-running late-night series after losing one of the most sought-after gigs in comedy, started out rough, making those TV spots for his hosting debut prescient. Gillis opened with a nod to his history at the show, telling the audience not to Google it — and said he probably shouldn’t...

Depending on who you ask, tonight’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” is either the completion of a redemption arc or a tone-deaf repeat of old mistakes.
Shane Gillis is set to host the show alongside musical guest 21 Savage, which will mark the Studio 8H debut that he was scheduled to make five years ago. Gillis was announced as an addition to the show’s cast in 2019, but old clips quickly began to resurface of Gillis making jokes on topics related to race, gender, and sexuality that many people found offensive. Lorne Michaels and “SNL” walked back the decision and fired Gillis before his tenure could begin, but his star has only grown as a stand-up comedian in the subsequent half decade. Now a bona fide comedy star in his own right, his hosting debut should be one of the most polarizing moments of the season.

Shane Gillis is struggling to workshop jokes in a promo for his Saturday Night Live hosting debut.
The comedian is hosting the upcoming episode of NBC’s sketch comedy show alongside musical guest 21 Savage.
In the video released on Wednesday, Gillis is testing some of his jokes for his monologue for SNL castmembers Marcello Hernández and Sarah Sherman, but they aren’t landing too well.
“I went to an Amish wedding once. I was the only one there who could do the Electric Slide,” he says, getting an awkward laugh from Hernández and Sherman.
Gillis continues, “New Planet of the Apes is coming out. It’s going to be bananas.”
He then teased the idea of doing some crowd work by asking audience members, “Are you guys dating? Are you seeing each other?” Hernández and Sherman jokingly went along, saying, “Yeah!”
“Gosh, must be nice,” Gillis says, followed by an awkward pause.
