Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar for playing the hard-as-nails drill instructor in 1982’s “An Officer and a Gentleman” a few years after winning an Emmy for his role as the cunning Fiddler in “Roots,” died early Friday morning. He was 87.
Gossett’s family announced his death in a statement, writing: “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
In Taylor Hackford’s “An Officer and a Gentleman,” Gossett’s Sgt. Emil Foley memorably drove Richard Gere’s character to the point of near collapse at a Navy flight school. Gossett was the first Black man to win the best supporting actor Oscar for that role.

Mbongeni Ngema, a distinguished South African musician and creator of the musical “Sarafina!,” died on Wednesday in a car accident. He was 68.
“Ngema was killed in a head-on car accident while returning from a funeral he was attending in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape this evening,” his family said in a statement to the Associated Press. It is understood that he was a passenger in the car.
A playwright, producer and composer, he is best known for creating the 1987 stage musical “Sarafina!,” which tells the tale of a student woman who sees her teacher sent to jail and inspires other to fight against the racial segregation system known as apartheid. In 1981, he also created “Woza Albert,” a satirical stage drama in which Jesus Christ returns to Earth as a black South African.
“Sarafina!,” with lyrics co-written by Hugh Masekela, first opened at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg with Leleti Khumalo in the title role.

In Kenneth Branagh's 2011 fantasy clunker "Thor," Chris Hemsworth plays an extraterrestrial once worshiped on Earth as the Norse God of Thunder. Thor and his retinue traverse the galaxy using a carefully protected device called the Bifröst, a.k.a. the Rainbow Bridge, which can zap travelers anywhere in the galaxy instantaneously within a massive laser beam. The Bifröst is protected and controlled by a powerful armored guard/engineer named Heimdall, a hulking hunk decked out in gold and leather and sporting eerie golden eyes. Those golden eyes allow Heimdall to see great distances and into other realms.
Heimdall was played by actor Idris Elba, who would go on to play the character in five additional Marvel Cinematic Universe pictures.
Elba, as many know, first broke into the public eye for his role on the hit HBO series "The Wire" in 2002. Since then, Elba has become a proper movie and TV star,...

World premiering out of the Marrakech Film Festival ahead of a wider and promising festival run, Luck Razanajaona’s “Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story” will offer the cinema of Madagascar its most prominent international showcase in nearly three decades.
The feat didn’t come easy — or quickly — for the Malagasy filmmaker, who graduated from Marrakech’s Esav film school in 2011 and then spent more than a decade crafting award-winning shorts while developing his first feature. Throughout that long development period — which eventually brought the filmmaker back to Marrakech for a slot at last year’s Atlas Workshops — Razanajaona honed and refined this story of a barely post-adolescent sapphire miner who returns to his native village in search of identity.
Among the many challenges was the simple question of period: The fact is, given Madagascar’s shatteringly predictable holding pattern, the narrative of dashed hopes and calls for reform could take...

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

Donald Trump compared himself to the late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, during a speech on the campaign trail.
Trump held a rally in Derry, New Hampshire, this week where he attacked President Joe Biden’s response to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
In his speech, Trump mentioned his four indictments and defended his actions.
“We have a capital that if you go there, you get shot,” he stated. “With this in mind, there’s no way I can get a fair trial. You know, I’m supposed to be getting because Donald Trump challenged the election, so let’s put him in jail for the rest of his life.”
“They don’t go after the people that cheated,” he continued. “Those people are free. If you want to challenge the result of an election, they hound you. Look what happened this weekend with two good people. They hound them,...

If you’re a child of the nineties, chances are you grew up loving Sinbad. Also known as David Atkins, Sinbad began his comedy career as a contestant on Star Search before nabbing his breakout role on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, where he played Coach Walter Oakes; he served as a mentor to the main cast, who all played students at the fictional Hillman College. His distinctive look made him instantly identifiable, and it wasn’t long before he started showing up in movies, with roles in Necessary Roughness and Coneheads.
His career was unusual because most people went to TV after their movie careers cooled down. For Sinbad, it was the opposite. His solo TV show, The Sinbad Show, was a flop, but shortly afterwards, his movie career went into high gear, with him appearing in a string of hit movies. Marvel once recruited actor Idris Elba to portray the Asgardian Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a character Elba felt great pride in playing, especially since he believed the character’s role could’ve been expanded on in the superhero franchise.

Elba has portrayed a couple of super-powered characters during his time in the spotlight. The actor initially found himself in his first superhero movie with Thor, where he played the Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall. He was aware that his character only had a small role in the feature. But Elba took the part anyway because he was eager to work with director Kenneth Branagh, who shot the first Thor.
“This is a man that’s an amazing actor. Just hearing him giving his take on how to mold me as an actor.

One of the UK’s highest profile nature presenters has revealed he is at a career crossroads, as he tries to determine the best use of his time to save the planet.
For nearly 40 years, Chris Packham has fronted TV shows about wildlife, beginning his career in children’s TV, and now being touted as a natural successor to pioneering presenter Sir David Attenborough.
Now Packham has made a documentary with Channel 4 called, provisionally, Is It Time to Break the Law? and he told the UK’s Guardian newspaper that, personally, he remains unsure of the answer, as any criminal record would bring his high-profile BBC career – and huge platform – to an end.
Packham said: “I would lose my voice immediately if I went to prison. I would also lose part of my mind, if not all of it, because that environment is not suitable for someone like myself.

Peter Gabriel first learned about former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in Rolling Stone. He doesn’t remember the exact date, but a 1975 article about Georgia’s Allman Brothers Band and their support for Carter’s presidential campaign is likely what caught his eye.
“I’ve always been interested in American politics, and I was fascinated to read that the Allman Brothers had played a critical role in getting some early funding for this ‘peanut farmer with principles,’” Gabriel reminisces on a recent Zoom call from his Real World Studios in Southwest England.

When a child learns, the entire community benefits,” she said. “It’s horrifying to think about the 72 million children who are not in school and may never have the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe environment. I believe that our world can become a much more productive and peaceful place when every child is given the opportunity to attend school.”
She answered phones at the Stand Up To Cancer telethon in 2008.

Most comic-book movies feature a cameo or two, and Shazam: Fury of the Gods was no exception, but the film almost included a celebrity cameo which would have been amazing. Director David. F Sandberg took to Twitter to reveal that Sinbad was originally set to make a cameo in the Shazam sequel.
I think I'll hold off on publishing this video for a bit. I just don't feel strong enough to deal with whatever bullshit and misinterpretations I'm sure will come of it. Sorry for the tease. But check out Shazam 2, out now on digital. And here's a clip for now: https://t.co/vbRvUToNRW pic.twitter.com/rfEcLLT5i1

It seems like only yesterday that Lucy Liu was landing on a Philadelphia baseball field on dragon-back to cause chaos, yet tomorrow "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is already set to land on digital platforms. Warner Bros. has confirmed to /Film that, as ComicBook.com first reported, the "Shazam" sequel film is already set to drop via digital release on April 7, 2023.
This is an exceptionally quick turnaround time for a film that hit theaters just under three weeks ago, but then again, superhero film fans don't exactly seem to be willing to head to theaters to support the Zachary Levi-led movie. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" saw a precipitous 67.8% drop between its first and second week of release, after underperforming during its opening weekend as well. Warner Bros' decision to quickly opt in to an at-home viewing option seems like a smart one, as DC fans who no longer consider...

With the outlandish spectacle of Donald Trump’s arraignment and arrest dominating the news on Tuesday, late night TV went all in on trying to capture the historical, yet wholly bizarre, nature of the day’s events.
On The Daily Show, guest host Roy Wood Jr’s introduction to Tuesday night’s episode was unsurprisingly focused on the absurdity of the breathless media coverage surrounding the former president’s made-for-cable TV journey from Mar-a-Lago to a Manhattan court for his arraignment. Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury for his alleged role in a scandal stemming from hush money payments made to the pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
In an exhaustive summary of Tuesday’s events, Wood highlighted how Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had compared Trump to Nelson Mandela and Jesus as other figures who had been subject to political arrest.

In the reflected light of Elton John’s diamond-studded lapels, aided by the hundreds of flashing pairs of Elton specs out in the arena, the end of the road – yellow brick, naturally – is in sight. We’ve fallen for the arena-filling farewell tour scam so often now that it’s an industry joke – Roger Waters is currently on what’s nudgingly billed as his first. But five years and almost 300 shows into Elton John’s globe straddling long goodbye – Farewell Yellow Brick Road, the highest-grossing tour in history – it’s hard to doubt Sir Reg’s sincerity.

Who ya gonna call? According to Ernie Hudson, anybody but the studio, claiming that Columbia Pictures purposely left him out of the marketing campaign of 1984’s Ghostbusters, despite being one of the four members.
During an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Ernie Hudson recalled how the studio mistreated him during the promotion of Ghostbusters. “I was the guy who was brought in, and so finding my place in the middle of that–and they were all welcoming and inclusive–the studio wasn’t, and the studio continued not to be.” While Winston Zeddemore was not an original member of the crew, his presence and necessity in Ghostbusters is undeniable. So, yes, Ernie, we’re ready to believe you.
“It made it very, very difficult because I was a part of [Ghostbusters], but then very selectively, I was sort of pushed aside. You know, when the posters came out, I’m not on the posters.

ReviewDespite the flaws in the script, I hope viewers will take home a deeper understanding of the justice system and that other filmmakers will attempt to emulate Shan’s sensitivity while making movies on systemic violence.TrailerScreengrab Written by Bharathy Singaravel What a relief to see Yogi Babu in a role that doesn’t make a comic element of him, but instead, gives him space to portray a flawed and deeply human character. Bommai Nayagi, by debutant director Shan, attempts to speak about child sexual assault, and how it is interlinked with caste, class, and access to justice. Yogi Babu as Velu, a labourer in a small tea shop, who is the father of nine-year-old Bommai (Sreemathi), brings to life the world-weariness of a man who knows that the system is stacked against people like him. Survival is his priority. To that effect, he thinks that if he keeps his head down,...

“I have to be careful about how I remember my memories.”
The director Milisuthando Bongela opens her discerning documentary Milisuthando with this shrewd declaration. It is an invitation, a notice and a guiding principle for her poetic meditation on a childhood affected by the violence of apartheid South Africa. Under Bongela’s direction, memories are pliant forces. They stretch into the past, haunt the present and creep into the future.
Bongela sifts through her memories and collects them along with those of her ancestors and other members of the Model C generation (a term used to describe the cohort of kids who integrated formerly whites-only schools in South Africa). She observes them with a keen sense of responsibility, interrogates them tenderly and then shapes them into a gentle and intimate narrative. Milisuthando is a longform journey that begins and ends in Transkei, a project of apartheid created to accommodate the...

Hot on the heels of their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex have set a new docuseries with the streamer titled “Live to Lead.”
They will executive produce the series and may also make an appearance in it if the trailer is anything to go by. The couple both appear in the almost two-minute long preview clad in black against a white background.
“This was inspired by Nelson Mandela, who once said ‘What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived,'” the British royal says before Meghan adds: “It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
“It’s about people who have made brave choices,” Harry continues at the end of the trailer.

Former president Barack Obama traveled to Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29, to campaign on behalf of another “Democrat with a funny name”: Mandela Barnes, Wisconsin’s Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate. It was an opportunity for Obama to take a swipe at former president Donald Trump, who dogged him throughout his presidency with racist dog whistles that falsely casted doubt on his U.S. citizenship. “Mandela, get ready to dig up that birth certificate,” Obama teased to massive applause.
