Ransom (1996)
Humorless Thriller
1 October 2003
There is no humor to be found in "Ransom" as it is the story of a boy's kidnapping and his parents attempts to bring him back safely. Mel Gibson delivers a great performance as a father on the verge of breaking down from the kidnapping ordeal. Rene Russo provides a role she rarely plays of a serious character, unlike her showcase roles in "Lethal Weapon 3 & 4", "Major League", and "The Thomas Crown Affair." She is very believable in her role as the boy's mother. Gary Sinise plays the deranged police officer who is so close to reality it's scary. You don't know what a cop thinks when you walk by them on the street because they have steel attitudes and looks. Ron Howard gives one of his best directing efforts yet making the movie intense to the end. By delivering no humor he keeps the subject matter serious and chilling to the very last reel.
