Review of Edtv

Edtv (1999)
7/10
Haven't I seen this before? Oh yea, when it was called The Truman Show.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked this movie, but I believe it to be a very bad choice by the movie studio to release it at the same time as Jim Carrey's critically acclaimed Truman Show. While the `other' movie got a lot of much deserved press and Oscar buzz, EdTv was left behind to soak in that often traveled river of average movies.

Matthew McConaughey is great as Ed Pekurney, the lucky man who gets to have every minute of his life broadcast over the airwaves for all to see. In its defense, EdTv is a completely different movie than the `other.' While The Truman Show followed the life of someone who wasn't aware he was being televised, EdTv gives Ed the chance to interact with the viewing audience. This opens a lot of new plot options, and creates the illusion that EdTv is on a different level than The Truman Show.

McConaughey was an excellent choice for this role coming off of A Time to Kill. He is great at portraying the childish, yet tender Ed that the role calls for. Jenna Elfman plays Shari. Shari is torn between Ed, whom she has liked ever since they met, and her boyfriend Ray, Ed's crazy brother. Elfman sadly misses with her delivery and never really convinces the audience that she belongs. Woody Harrelson is Ray Pekurney, Ed's brother. He is spectacular in his role, and really brings together the whole craziness of a picture such as this.

I suggest this movie to all who have seen The Truman Show, and want to see a different look to this similar idea.
