Review of Edtv

Edtv (1999)
7/10
Of its genre ?!?!?!
27 November 1999
Coming out of the cinema afterwards, I was talked to by a strange man who said it "wasn't the greatest of its genre". You know, that kind of pretentious moron who ends up reviewing films for the local paper and telling you that any half commercial is rubbish by definition.

Of it's genre ?!?!? The Truman Show and Ed TV does not make a genre. It's an idea, done twice.

I really enjoyed the Truman show, but this also had its charms and the casting was well done, heck even Ellen DeGeneres wasn't as annoying as usual. Liz Hurley was one of the funnier parts - never have I seen such a one dimensional and comical character in what was promoted as a (semi) serious film!

Woody Harrelson was as good as ever as Ed's brother (classic book he released called "My brother pissed on me"!), and Matthew McConaughey was back to one of his better roles since he so impressed in A Time To Kill.

This film was well scripted and eminently watchable, and there is an excellently done conclusion as to how to stop the TV cameras following Ed and his family around.

Jenna Elfman was vomit enducingly nice - although that's clearly what the character called for - and Martin Landau again shows us that his acting talent was wasted in that dreadful TV series Space: 1999.

Definitely worth seeing and enjoyable.
