Review of Edtv

Edtv (1999)
7/10
Funnier than The Truman Show
5 December 1999
Of course, "The Truman Show" was not supposed to be entirely funny (a "serious message" there), but I not only found "Edtv" funnier, I found the serious message--such as it is--more understandable and less pretentious. (Actually, this movie appears to be an imitation not of "Truman" but of "Louis 19," a French comedy released five years earlier.) I do not give this movie the highest rating because I think a lot of the laughs are cheap, yet I admit to being entertained, and that counts for a great deal in my estimation. I also enjoyed the twists in the plot and the way TV viewers in the movie directly relate to Ed (not a possibility in "The Truman Show" because that "show" is a secret kept from Truman). Martin Landau et al. turn good performances in "Edtv," a movie that has been under-rated just because it came out too close on the heels of the Jim Carrey vehicle.
