Review of Kadosh

Kadosh (1999)
8/10
Some inaccuracies, but makes a valid point...

What is most troubling about KADOSH is that it rather accurately portrays the treatment of women in many ultra-Orthodox communities. Physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, including marital rape, does occur. This is balanced, both in the movie and in real life, by healthy and loving relationships.

However, the film contains enough "mistakes" in its portrayal of religious Jews, that the viewers who should be most affected by it will dismiss the entire premise on the basis of exaggeration. Specific errors include: Meir's morning ritual, which is out of order and out of place; aspects of the mikvah/ritual bath, including the reasons surrounding it; Malka's wedding ceremony, which does not include the giving of a ring--an opportunity for the bride to protest; Meir's possession of the marriage document, an item which is clearly given to and retained by the wife. Hiring a religious consultant, or even asking a few knowledgeable friends probably would have alleviated this problem.

If you can go in aware of a few ritualistic errors, this is definitely a film to see.
