: : : Cybersix: Animated Series A Review:

I first saw the animated series Cybersix air in Canada on Teletoon's "Tournament of Champions" (in which Cybersix beat Johnny Bravo by 13 votes). I've never even heard of this super-heroine before so naturally my opinions were being formed as I watched.

My first impression was confusion and some disdain for the character. I did not understand until around halfway through the series exactly what Cybersix was...a super-powered female version of Frankenstein made by a brilliant yet mad scientist. The costume she wears looks like a cheap rip-off of Spawn's own, complete with the flared satanic hood and cape. And what kind of super hero wears stiletto heels? Would be rather hard fighting the bad guys while wearing them, wouldn't it? :>

However, by the fourth episode, I gotten to like Cybersix. The animation is breath-taking, the stories (when they were good...explained later) are engaging and imaginative, written for all ages. The self-conflict Cybersix bears alone within herself is touching without going to the point of being sappy. You can't help but cheer for this character when she knocks down a villian with a good punch, and can't help but feel sorry for her when she struggles and stumbles while attempting to find humanity and love.

Now, my praise for the series also comes with some criticism. First of all, the series assumes you know about Cybersix's origin. If you are not familar with her origin, like myself, you are going to be confused at first. You will not know what a Techno or Sustenance is because it is not explained in the series. I had to go on the World Wide Web and view a few home pages about Cybersix to make up for the lack of information.

Second of all is the mix of good and bad episodes. While "Daylight Devil", "The Eye", and what looks like the end of Cybersix in the grim-titled "The Final Confrontation" are well-written and engaging, you will come across episodes like "Blue Birds Of Horror" and "Gone With The Wings" that quite frankly stink. Episodes like "Full-Moon Fascination" and "The Greatest Show In Meridiana" and the rest rank from good to great.

I did mention the series had great animation, but it looks like they cut a few corners in some cases. One glaring one is a violation of gender anatomy. While Cybersix is undeniably female (whoo-hoo! :) ), she secretly masquerades as a male teacher named Adrian Seidelman. The problem I have is that as Adrian, Cybersix is drawn by the animators with male hands and a male body. When Cybersix is in costume, she is drawn with very clearly defined female features ( ;) ) and female hands. I would have preferred a more compromise of how the body of the Cybersix/Adrian character is drawn for sake of realism. But then again, it's only a cartoon :)

Bottom line is that the series can become a winning series in the same category as Warner Brother's "Batman & Superman" series. It just needs a bit of fine-tuning
