An intense, totally involving look at complex family dynamics in rural Spain.
21 November 1999
This film, only the second feature by the young filmmaker Gracia Querejeta (who co-wrote the screenplay with her father, the producer), is a powerful, intricately constructed and totally involving look at some very complex family dynamics in rural Galicia, with beautiful seaside scenery thrown in for good measure. Three adult sisters (with the wonderful Mercedes Sampietro as the oldest) who are not close get together at the death of their mother, and flashbacks to their childhood illustrate a tragic family history. I sincerely hope this film gets shown outside Spain.
