Review of Bichunmoo

Bichunmoo (2000)
10/10
My Comfort Film
27 February 2004
I visited the local video store looking for a film to add to my Chinese Cinema collection. There was a wonderful Chinese cashier that I would chat with each time I was there. I told her i was looking for a great martial arts film and she directed me to Bichunmoo. She told me it was a martial arts version of Romeo & Juliet. I nearly dropped it right there. I am glad I didn't.

Bichunmoo is my favorite movie ever - right there with Gladiator and Crouching Tiger. The flying and internal body explosions were sort of cheesy but still well done. The animated morphing of the two lovers from children to adults grabbed me at the start and the dance of death performed by Sullie showed a true individual strength and sensitivity few actresses have shown. The 10 warriors were cool as hell and the Namgung lover/opponent gave a stellar performance. His sacrifice was extremely touching and done very well.

I have given this movie a 10 and actually bought a $4000 projector to have Bichunmoo watching parties using the wall as my background. I love this movie so much that I watch it at least once a month. I hope to find something that inspires me as much.
