Warning: Spoilers
Watched the Criterion Collection DVD just released and the interview with Director Renoir was a joy. He's quite a character. Scorcese's interview had some spoiler material,so watch AFTER the movie. Rumer Goden BBC documentary is as beautiful as the movie. The movie itself is almost a documentary in the cinematography. Many of the people aren't professional actors, but that isn't a problem. Hard to believe that Valerie plays Julie Christie's mom in just 14 years in Dr Zhivago, and then is in A Clockwork Orange. I would assume that much of the "native" events are real and not contrived, but unless you're a native from the 1950's, I'm not sure how you would know. It certainly seems a big step up from Gunga Din.
