I've just finished seeing the movie, and my first feeling is: this is a huge waste of good ideas, excellent actors and brilliant photography.
Never read the comic, and if I've had, I'd probably hate this movie.
Why? Because it simply doesn't work. The characters are flat, the soundtrack doesn't help you feel anything for any of them, bad pacing (it's slow when it should be fast, and vice-versa), and last but certainly not least: the plot is ridiculous and completely out of context in this movie.
It's difficult to mix so many genres in a movie: western, romance, vengeance, acid-trips, Indian pseudo-philosophical rambling, this movie has all, but doesn't manage to make them work.
But why is it that many people like this movie? Because it has a superb photography (filled with beautiful landscapes and great close-ups), good actors (though the characters are not), and a sense of originality that is lacking in most mainstream movies.
Some may say that it has a great ending, some even compare it to 2001, blasphemy!!! :) , where the main character trips and supposedly fights the villain in a higher plane of consciousness. Personally I just saw a montage of cool wallpapers in motion with no rational meaning, interwoven so that you are amazed. Were they pretty? Yes it is a beautiful scene, but there's no content there, no meaning, no feeling, no objective. Which is, in fact, a sum of the whole movie.
So we're left with memorable images and strange settings, but nothing to relate them to. So much good cinematography laid to waste because there was no sense of balance in the movie.
If you're a person who loves good photography, or likes to watch original movies, or love pseudo-artistic movies, then see it.
But if you want to be moved by a film, want entertainment, or even want a movie that you can remember in years to come and discuss, then go see something else.
