Unleashed (2005)
9/10
Sentimental Action Film
30 June 2005
Danny (a very straight and emotional ! Jet Li) reminds me of Truffaut's "wild boy", raised by a wicked man (a brilliant Bob Hoskins), he's taught to act like a wild dog. More importantly, he is taught how to hate and how to use it to kill like a ravage dog.

The plot is simple (and rather naife), but still very moving and touching, which is very odd in an action movie. This is mostly thanks to the marvellous performance by Morgan Freeman, who plays a blind piano tuner who finds an abandoned Danny and helps him become a whole man, capable of love and care, apart from hate.

And so, like the "wild boy", he is shown the light, and taken into the real world to learn how to really live.

The reason why this movie is really good is basically because it is very powerful in its emotions and storyline, though managing at the same time, of being capable of delivering good solid action sequences, with great kung-fu fighting "a la Jet Li".

It all comes together thanks to Leterrier's directing, which is reminiscent of Luc Besson's, with its fast paced editing, great and dark photography, and an excellent sense of style.

So if you are looking for a great action movie, or simply want to be moved by a film (and don't mind bits of violence), you'll definitely enjoy this one.
