A Lot Like Bland
2 October 2005
Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and Emily (Amanda Peet) become fast friends during a flight from Los Angeles to New York, but they never get romantically involved, even after they keep bumping into each other over the course of seven years. With so many failed relationships between them, maybe they are better off for each other than they'd like to admit.

The premise is nothing new as this type of film has been done before. I was still hoping for a nice, harmless movie though. However, the film was pretty dull and unremarkable. In some ways, it was better than I expected it to be but it's still not worth watching. The story was just too corny and lame for me. There were also too many unbelievable moments between the two main characters. The script actually held potential even if it wasn't original. However, the casting was all wrong and the direction was weak.

The acting is average at best with only one person really standing out. Amanda Peet saves the film from being really bad. She really is a talented actress and proves it in this film. She really needs to start choosing her roles better though. Ashton Kutcher is a miscast here. He gives a bland performance and doesn't really seem to put any energy in his role. Besides for the previous two, no one else really appears in the film. Taryn Manning plays Oliver's sister and she gives an okay performance. There are some other supporting actors including Ali Larter, Kathryn Hahn and Tyrone Giordano. None of them really do anything special though.

The main problem with this film is that the two leads have no chemistry with one another. Watching these two have a conversation just isn't very interesting. I find it very hard to believe that she would actually be attracted to him. This is what made the film boring to watch since these two aren't very interesting or believable together. The direction is also weak because of the mismatched pair. He focused too much on them and he should have thrown in a subplot. A Lot Like Love is your typical romantic comedy so it's very predictable and the movie ended up being pretty dull. There was nothing remarkable about this movie and there's really no reason to see it. In the end, I strongly recommend that you skip this film as it has been done before and better. However, if you really love Amanda Peet or Ashton Kutcher then maybe you should check this film out. If you don't fit into that category then stay away. Rating 4/10
