My Thoughts
27 February 2006
I missed watching this movie on my local PBS channel but was very excited to catch it on HBO Black History Special. This is a very stirring movie. I have read like everyone else - the AIDS epidemic on the continent of Africa is catastrophic, I believe that Yesterday is like many women who are HIV positive everywhere in the WORLD who are in heterosexual relationships and catch it from their MEN. She has an unshakable faith in the midst of the her illness, she faces her illness head on - believing that she must stay strong for her child. It only confirms what I've always believed about Africa that taboos are stronger than reality in their life. No one is immune in Africa from HIV/Aids when you have men who don't value marriage and commitment. Just look at the way her husband beat her - and the security guard did NOTHING to intervene. So submission is deadly to an African woman. But Yesterday continues on living the life she was dealt in a poor African compound where the other women will also likely become infected as well. I believe that nothing can prevent HIV/AIDS but education and protection - taboos must be broken and Africans must live in reality, and their bodies must become sacred and women must protect themselves and their bodies. But most of all they must began to think differently about who they are.
