Like commenter rayinla-1 I saw this movie on HBO when originally broadcast and was very moved by it. Only thing is it was an Afterwork Special not an HBO Afterschool Special for me. Though it has been quite awhile since I saw this movie I review it anyway since I consider it to be a basis or foundation of some of my own counseling not that I have done but that I have when my employer me in a bad situation offered Employee Assistance which I accepted submitting myself to it needed because of another individual my viewable life, example, had influence on. I am reminded by What If I'm Gay? by another movie National Lampoon Barely Legal AKA: After School Special, 2003. In 'What If..' a very nice boy/man is growing up in ways he had not expected and is keeping hidden probably in the hope it will pass not understood or yet embraced by him. This movie and it's lead, Richard Joseph Paul, so impressed me and himself that when I also saw another movie of his later not expecting him, Quick Change, 1990, I was delighted to see that he was alright so believable was his character interpretation in 'What If...' I saw the Quick Change character as his growth and peace, normalcy, since 'What If I'm Gay?' kind of like transposition onto the actor himself when I do not know anything about the actor but his talent totally convinced me and maybe under stress myself at the time I might have needed to identify with someone who was okay and still someone or an example I could hope to be and maybe not go to the bad place. The combination of these things among other things, other film, led me to see that one can be prejudiced against themself and believe that only the things and manner of what others, successes, show us is who we are or will be and we have no charge, say, or ability to prevent it. It is said often that God does not like robots so why should it be that all people who may have a need, an acceptance, some will say choice desire for their own, to act the same? In many cases the majority somewhat light. Such films as What If I'm Gay? in conjunction with other teen movies where some make adult video in their parents' basement on a lark might help to see that the second time might be the charm as is hinted in After School Special or that there is a way that God will still have our life among His own and be proud of it that you are His even if things are not exactly perfect and a little crooked. It even begins with a threat of eunuchs which of course does not actually happen so I guess figuratively is the order of the day and not literally in National Lampoon Barely Legal AKA: After School Special. Fairly good movie that helps to understand teens and growth or who we were before we had to handle the needs of teens ourselves. Maybe even the postponed needs of adults.
