Leatherheads (2008)
4/10
Good, But Very Disappointing
5 April 2008
I was in the hopes that Leatherheads would be a great film to watch after seeing the trailers to it. The beginning was good and there were many funny moments throughout the movie, but what bothered me the most about this movie was it lacked originality. I saw a minimum of 2 movies with their characters in it. George Clooney as Dodge Connolly, I saw as early pro football's version of Paul Newman's character, Reggie Dunlop from Slapshot; An aging player, who's trying to keep his team from folding. John Kasinski, as Carter Rutherford; Another Roy Hobbs from The Natural; A talented player with a past he's trying to hide, with Renee' Zellweiger as Lexie Littleton; A female version of Robert Duvall's character, Max Mercy from The Natural; The investigative reporter trying to find out about Rutherford's past and the romance part between Dodge and Lexie reminded me of Annnie Savoy and Crash Davis from Bull Durham. The only thing missing from this movie were the Hanson Brothers and Wiford Brimley, as Pop Fisher.

It would be one thing if this movie was spoofing sports movies, but it's clear that it wasn't.

In addition, I thought there were scenes that were very predictable. For example, when Dodge and Lexie were in a gin joint and when it started to get silent, I was thinking, the police raid is going to happen......NOW and sure enough you heard the police whistle blowing and you can hear a cop saying this is a raid. I was thinking, it's prohibition and I saw that one coming a mile away.

Although it's not all that bad, but I would not recommend paying full price for this movie; I'd wait until either you can see it at an economy price, or wait until it's in a second run discount theater or DVD.
