Black Beauty (1978)
10/10
One of my favourite Black Beauty adaptations...

That is along with the 1994 film. I do have a fondness for this since it was the first adaptation of the book that I saw. As an adaptation, it isn't 100% faithful, but on its own merits it works wonderfully. The best assets are the settings and music. The series does look absolutely stunning, with rich and authentic locations and beautiful photography. The music is outstanding, the main theme stayed with me for a long time after watching it first time and it continues to have that effect on me, while the other background music is equally great. The story is still moving and entertaining, and the script and direction are both well-above average. The series is well-paced as well with very few scenes being dull. And I agree the ending is touching. The acting is good with just the presence of the likes of Eileen Brennan and Farley Granger being a delight, and Black Beauty himself is thoughtful, majestic and likable and the performance is note-perfect. In conclusion, a wonderful series that I have a real fondness for. 10/10 Bethany Cox
