Dexter: First Blood (2010)
Season 5, Episode 5

Under the bridge
13 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This chapter begins with a gathering of parents at a place where the children are playing under a round multicolored tent-like. One of the mothers takes her son in her arms and notices a scratch on his face. She figures it must have come from Harrison. Dexter gets dirty looks as he departs. He decides to go back to Sonya with his son, after the threats she made of not wanting to take care of the boy again.

Lumen Pierce is seen at the coffee shop where Dexter goes. She is in a much better frame of mind. Dexter has come with a ticket for her to go back to Minnesota, something she is reluctant to do. She wants to continue her search for Robert Brunner, the friend of Boyd who abused her, and still at large.

Dexter gets lucky in locating Robert Brunner, who has been spotted living under the Julia Tuttle bridge. He is surprised when the man he think is responsible for what happened to Lumen had nothing to do with the crime itself. In fact, he goes back after not finding Lumen in her motel room because she has gone after Brunner. Dexter arrives in time to prevent her killing the man.

Deb and Batista get lucky when they go to interview Jandro at the hospital. He cooperates with the detectives and even discloses an observation about the man that attacked him: he draws the tattoo on his hand, something for them to go on. Upon checking with Masuka, he sends them to talk to an artist Michael Angelo for clues about the nature of the markings. Michael Angelo, a woman, shows an unusual interest in Deb. It is Deb who discovers that the tattoo is not such a thing, but a logo for a dance club.

Batista is clearly jealous of his wife. She has been working to close with the I.A. man. The sergeant goes nuts when he discovers a text message in her phone that seems to indicate she is going to have a tryst at a motel. Figuring the worst, Batista arrives when Maria has busted a bad Stan Liddy in a room because she was wired.

Directed by Romeo Tirone, and written by Timothy Schlattmann, this was another good episode in the series, well paced and quite involving, as most of the chapters are. Julia Stiles shows again as Lumen, the battered young woman fighting her demons. Ms. Stiles gives a good performance opposite Michael C. Hall. They have some good chemistry going on. Peter Weller shows up in a small role. The regulars and the guest cast do their best to keep things moving.
