Off beat hilarious!
17 March 2012
The previews didn't give me any idea what the movie was really like. Tom Hanks is delightful (and I can't say that I'm always much of a fan) Julia Roberts was horrible and funny (can't wait to see her now as the evil queen in the snow white movie) and the whole show was just full of everything from quirky funny to laugh out loud.

Tom Hanks plays an older guy who loses his job and finds he isn't really qualified for much, so he enrolls in the local community college. You only ever see two of his classes, a speech class taught by Julia Roberts - who is angry with her life and angry with the world and hilarious in her anger - and Sulu from Star Trek. OK, he has another name, but come on, he's Sulu but now teaching economics. He is very dry witted and hilarious.

A college girl decides to befriend Tom Hanks and their friendship (she really takes him under her wing and brings him up to the current century) is a delightful thing to watch. Father/daughterish, not weird.

This movie has wonderful side characters and the whole thing is do low-key and off-beat funny, but really sharp. Loved it!
