Cartman: Superhero!

Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens Cartman's distinct but deeper than usual voice provides a film noir style introduction as he explains how crime in South Park has risen and to counter that crime it needs a need kind of crime fighter; and Cartman is that crime fighter! Wearing a raccoon costume and calling himself 'The Coon' he sets about cleaning up South Park... we see him rescue a woman from a rapist (actually her boyfriend whose attentions were welcome) and pay a visit to the police who make it clear they wish he'd just go away. The next day nobody is talking about The Coon so Cartman tells everybody here has heard where The Coon will be that night... none of them turns up but somebody else in a costume does... the mysterious Mysterion! Cartman is furious that there is another superhero in town; especially as everybody pats attention to Mysterion. So he sets about trying to discover his identity. To do this he will go to any length; even team up with the evil Professor Chaos (Butters) and threaten to blow up a hospital unless Mysterion unmasks himself!

This was a pretty funny episode; I liked the film noir style opening; even the animation looked darker. The gritty feel and gravelly voices are clearly inspired by Christopher Nolan's Batman films but you don't need to have watched those films to enjoy this. It is predictable but hilarious that Cartman will resort to committing an atrocity in order to get rid of a rival crime fighter; equally funny is how despite all his attempts nobody is even slightly interested in The Coon but they all want to know who Mysterion is. The final 'unmasking' of Mysterion is funny too because it is done in a way that still leaves his identity a mystery to the viewer!
