Some recurring themes, twists that doesn't really fit.
The ending scene could have been a reference to Solaris(1972)'s ending if the water wouldn't have moved at all.
Also with some more work like the camera zooming out of the view it could have been really resembling to the ending scene of Solaris(1972) referring to the similarities like dead partners, imaginary places, peace etc.
Even if the ending pictures would be exactly like the movie's the convenient explanation: John or Olivia have seen the movie, would just show even stronger the similarities between the two scenes.
