Deeply Disturbing Reality TV
30 June 2015
Reality television revels in anything unusual, offbeat, and weird. Here, the producers work diligently to portray these Little People as all that and more. Instead of members of society who happen to be smaller than the majority of the population, the size of these reality stars is used to make them appear to be some sort of human aberration. There is nothing the bit odd about the parents on this program but those responsible for this sideshow make a serious effort to use what is different about them disturbing. Pure exploitation! But what else is new? Reality television exploits the most broken, troubled, unlikable, and pitiful among us out to be freaks and takes joy in doing so. The Little People on this series don't qualify for membership in the club of misfits that provide fodder for the ghouls responsible for bottom-of-the-barrel TV. The family on Little People, Big World deserve to be treated with respect and it's tragic they have allowed themselves to be heartlessly displayed in this way.
