Warning: Spoilers
Basically most people attend movies to get away from the daily grind of life. Here we have a reality piece. A fast talking Lawyer Harry Fabian (Robert De Niro) with a failed plan. Harry has a girlfriend Helen (Jessica Lange) a wannabee restaurateur girl friend seeking a liquor licence which results in a failed restaurant. As this tale unfolds your hoping in the end everything we'll work it's self out especially for our star (the underdog) De Niro. De Niro did his fine job of playing the shyster and his plan to fill a boxing card. Using his energy and persuasive dialogue to no avail to deaf ears with a supporting cast of notables; Alan King, Jack Warden and Cliff Gorman.. This movie was very predictable and waiting for the plot to twist and turn in our stars favor never happens. Like a blind man walking along the precipice of the Grand Canyon. This story was doomed to failure. Everybody fails. As your viewing you say to yourself, "Why did I wait so long for the inevitable?" I was generous in giving this movie a grade of three stars for Jessica Lange and Robert DeNiro under the tutelage of acting school coach the renown Stella Adler. There is a scene added to showcase Regis Philbin and Wife Joy. WHY? I actually argued about this movie with my Late Mother as to why this story was told? My Mother said "It's reality!" One of the few films I put on my list that I personally disliked yet had to watch for it's tragic predictable nature. De Niro for the most part held my interest with his positive energy despite insurmountable odds. The few instances where the acting overpowered the story.
