The Operation
21 February 2016
Leonard Nimoy stars as a skilled but sociopathic surgeon named Dr. Barry Mayfield, who is plotting to kill his mentor Dr. Hidemann(played by Will Geer) during his heart operation, substituting dissolving suture for permanent, because of his stalling on a research project they are both working on, but the attending nurse(played by returning actress Anne Francis) is suspicious, which forces Mayfield to kill her, making it look like the result of illicit drug activity involving a VA patient of hers. This causes Lt. Columbo(Peter Falk) to become convinced of his guilt, though just how can the Lt. outsmart the clever doctor? One of the best episodes of the series, compelling and clever, with a memorable performance by Nimoy as the particularly odious villain that Columbo even loses his temper with, leading to satisfying finish.
