Wow wow wow. It was inevitable that a character like the slimy Lester had to get his comeuppance eventually, and he sure did, in a gratifying way. It's fitting that even after everything went down he escaped for two weeks and kept going all the way to the end, never giving up. That seems like him. In the end, he would rather fall through thin ice and die on his own terms than be captured. At least he got what he deserved. In fact, pretty much all the characters in the finale got what they deserved. Molly is the new chief of police, Gus is a mailman, Lorne is dead. It's a real happy ending, compared to the original movie which although ending in the capture of the criminal, had quite a grim tone.

Lester's journey this episode revealed what an unpleasant person he really is. Instead of crying real tears for his dead wife, he immediately thought up a plan to absolve himself of her murder and pretended to be all distraught at her death. In reality, he didn't care; the only way her death mattered to him was in how it could lead the police to him.

Gus, meanwhile, is pushed to murder. It can easily be seen as a victory given that Lorne is a villain, but the nasty smile on his face as he dies says it all: Lorne's last triumph has been to bring out the monster in Gus. What he has constantly been doing since episode one is bringing out people's deepest, darkest animalistic instincts and this is no different.

But Lorne hardly goes out in a blaze of glory. Throughout this season, seeing him carry out his objectives flawlessly has led us to believe he's almost a god. He clearly considers himself above everyone else, seeing people as his playthings. But he makes mistakes too. He puts his foot in a bear trap, something we wouldn't have expected Lorne to do. Then, when Gus shoots him in the chest, he continues breathing and for a brief moment, it looks like he's immortal. Then Gus shoots him in the head and he dies. Looks like Lorne Malvo was just an ordinary mortal after all.
