To me the most important aspect of this film is its emphasis on the importance of erotic images in helping people of a repressed sexual identity find themselves and to feel part of a shared humanity.
Although the film covers Tom's life over several decades and can be accused of superficiality skirting through the major issues it presents, I found it to have an intense emotional impact. It brought me to tears several times though the film itself is not sentimental. It is, in fact, a film that celebrates truth and courage unapologetically.
