To be fair the original version's even more difficult but that doesn't say much. Aside from that nitpick this's a great game. It's fun, colorful and has an interesting story. It is a shame that it was revealed to be all a dream in the end. It's cool how you can play as Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach who later become playable in future games.
Fans seem split on whether this's a Mario game or not. Personally, I think it is. While it may be different it's still Mario and the elements introduced would later carry on to other Mario games. It's kind've like The Legend of Zelda: The Adventure of Link in that people are also split on whether it's canon or not.
As far as gameplay goes, it can get tough at times. Enemies pop out of nowhere to ambush you and the controls can be slippery at times depending on the character. Otherwise it's a solid game. If you want a good challenge you'll definitely find it here. I suggest playing either the All-Stars or the Advance version as you can save your progress. Hop in and check it out.
