Review of Elsa & Fred

Elsa & Fred (2014)
4/10
The film is so lightweight, there is almost no film.

Given the genre's notorious ageism, seeing a new wave of romantic comedies with older leads is refreshing. But after And So It Goes last year, a failed effort with Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, finding another well-cast yet criminally boring offering is dispiriting.Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer are the stars of fresh neighbors falling with unconvincing ease to each other in the midst of groaning prostate jokes. The bland headline makes their names a helpful reminder. But they could also be called Old Grouchy Man and Old Free-Spirit Woman with this shallow characterization. The film is so lightweight, there is almost no film.
