It was a long reach-and they missed ...

Warning: Spoilers
First let me say that I really like All in the Family. The first few years of the show were almost all great episodes. Great writing, funny, and fast-moving. This particular episode showcases just how bad the show had become toward the end. Somewhere between the first few years of the show, and this episode, the show lost it's heart. They were running out of ideas, and desperation was showing. Instead of getting new writers they got into lazy habits such as introducing 'disposable characters' that lasted only a few episodes, only to disappear without a trace. In this episode a character that was seen only 2 times previously is killed in a mugging ! As a result of this killing,Edith has a 'crisis of faith' (!?) In the seven previous seasons I don't remember Edith ever being particularly pious... But the show drones on and on about Edith's 'crisis of faith' in an annoying and heavy-handed manner. Think of a sledgehammer and an ant. Then, suddenly, after all the 'crisis of faith' baloney,Edith turns on a dime and has a quick change of heart. The whole thing seemed cheap and fake-and I have a high tolerance for both !🌞
