You, me and BT.

'Titanfall 2 (2016)' is a great first-person shooter. Its fast, fluid movement and precise, satisfying gun-play combine for an incredibly enjoyable experience. The campaign does a wonderful job of balancing the time you spend on foot with the time you spend in your Titan, an intelligent battle robot. These aspects feel distinct from one another, primarily in terms of speed and firepower. However, they are ultimately inseparable and are a large part of what makes the piece so successful overall. The story itself goes to great lengths to ensure you're connected to your specific Titan, BT, by giving him a distinct personality and allowing you limited yet important dialogue choices. It's a real 'buddy cop' situation and it works really well; you actually care about the hunk of metal. The plot is typical 'rookie becomes master' type stuff, filled with cliché mercenaries and 'save the world' stakes. Yet, it fits the game's aesthetic like a glove and is bizarrely satisfying, to boot. It's just fun. As is the multiplayer, which makes excellent use of its somewhat asymmetrical central dynamic. The time to death isn't too low, there are a variety of Titans to choose from and the on-foot movement is as quick and easy as it is in the campaign. Overall, the game is one of the best recent entries in its genre. 8/10
