A Dull Comedy

"Clemson Reade" (Cary Grant) is a salesman who specializes in hydraulic equipment and has found himself in the Middle Eastern nation of Bukistan where he just concluded a sale. While there he is made a guest of the "Khan of Bukistan" (Eduard Franz) who allows his daughter "Princess Tarji" (Betta St. John) to entertain him. He also learns of the customs as it relates to husbands and wives and is greatly impressed. To that extent, upon returning to the United States he realizes how unhappy all of his friends are in their marriages and begins to realize that his fiancé, "Effie" (Deborah Kerr) is too over-bearing in her views and dedicated in her work in the State Department and that this would lead to unhappiness for the both of them over time. So after an argument with her he decides to cancel their engagement and subsequently sends a telegram to the Khan of Bukistan asking for the hand of Princess Tarji instead. What he doesn't know is that the State Department has intercepted the telegram and--extremely concerned about their relationship to the oil producing country--they send a liaison to make sure that the engagement proceeds without any possible disruptions. And the person they send is none other than-Effie. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say film had some potential and considering the cast should have been quite successful. Unfortunately, the humor wasn't nearly as sharp as it should have been for a comedy of this sort and none of the characters demonstrated anything out of the ordinary either. It was a rather dull film throughout. That being said, I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.
