Review of Ramy

Ramy (2019– )

Good but season 2 falls short

This is a good comedy drama that addresses important issues that Muslims face in the US (and also in the west generally). However, there are a few mistakes here and there. For example, Muslims don't curse in front of their parents. Even if they drink and do all the Haram stuff, they respect their parents no matter what most of the time (unless there's a serious issue in the family). Secondly, and since I just finished S2, the Hadith in the end of last episode is NOT authentic and scholars agreed on that. One more thing, this is a story of one family, and not all Muslim families in the west are like this. Actually most of them are not. I'm a Belgian Egyptian who was born in Antwerp. We don't find it that hard here to practice our religion. Unless we really don't want to. There are other problems in the show that Muslims can understand they mistakes.

With that being said, I think season 1 was really good. I laughed out loud sometimes even. The plot was interesting and I could sympathize more with Ramy. But season 2 was the complete opposite. Ramy is shown as a very weak character that's doing anything he's been told to do, and just can't say no. By the end of the second season, I felt like I'm not sympathizing with him that much anymore. And I agreed with Sheikh Ali with what he said in the final scene between them.

I really wanted to like Ramy (the character) in season 2, but I found myself feeling more for the father (Farouk). His episode was really good and I bet many Muslim fathers could relate.
