Bad Moon

There is a Bad Moon rising for Janet and her young son as their new houseguest is in fact a werewolf.

While doing research in a rainforest in Nepal, a man named Ted is attacked by a werewolf while watching his girlfriend get slaughtered by the beast. His sister Janet is a lawyer and single mom who lives in small town with her son Brett and their adorable dog Thor. Once she finds out that Ted is back in the States, she invites him to stay with them at her house. Janet hears on the news that five hikers were found dead where Ted was recently living, all thanks to some sort of wild animal. Also at the moment the sun sets, we see that Ted turns into a werewolf. Will Ted be able to stop himself from killing his family as the werewolf, or is the curse just too strong to be stopped?

I enjoyed Bad Moon a lot for a werewolf film. It has a beautiful filming location of the secluded house in the woods where most of the action takes place, sets the tone very well. There is also a decent level of gore and it's done very well for the most part. Bad Moon also takes all of the rules we've come to know about werewolves and tosses them out the window. In this one, Ted turns into a werewolf every night whether it's a full moon or not. And there is no silver bullet element either.

Bad Moon's flaws for me were both with the character of Ted and the actor who played him (Michael Pare). Some of the acting choices he made seemed out of place and a bit goofy. I also thought Ted was supposed to be a decent person, but the writing ended up making him come off like a terrible person. I get that he thought by being around his family it might cure his inevitable doom, but to put your sister and nephew's lives in danger for a slim chance was questionable. Mariel Hemingway and Mason Gamble were good as mom and son, but the real star of this movie was without a doubt Primo who played the hero dog Thor.

I would recommend Bad Moon for fans of the genre. It did a lot of things right and definitely kept me entertained the whole way.
