Warning: Spoilers
Spirits of the Past is an Animated movie I have owned on DVD for the past thirteen years and have only just gotten around to watching mainly because I own way too many Blu Rays and DVDs and this one just kinda got pushed to the back of the shelf.

I honestly wish I had watched this movie sooner as I actually found it to be one of the best animated movies I've seen in a while. The story is an interesting one that's theme is environmental focusing on a post apocalyptic world where the forest is a powerful living spirit that provides water to a city of humans who live in the ruble of an old city. A young girl named Toola a survivor from the old world is awoken from stasis by a young man named Agito who shows her what the world has become while she slept. Toola brings with her a device from the past that can access technology from the old world which the forest tells the leaders of the city will bring about the destruction of the forest and the supply of water.

The story does change a little about half way through when it goes from a charming and quiet movie to more action oriented with the inclusion of a villain who plans to destroy the forest by using old world weapons. But Even though the feel of the movie changes a little I personally felt like it didn't spoil the movie as the action scenes are really cool and aren't over the top in the way most animated movies are with action scenes.

The animation style used in Spirits of the Past is breathtakingly beautiful and really works well with the environmental theme of the movie. The soundtrack is also perfectly in tune with the movies theme soft and gentle to listen to while enjoying the stunning animation and bright colours.

I highly recommend watching this movie if you enjoy Animated movies that focus more on telling a story with likable and interesting characters while still giving you plenty of action to enjoy.
