Get on Board

If you wanted to teach someone about American cinema I think this is one of the films you would show them. Caine Mutiny is brilliant. I never knew much of the back story (the USS Hull and the Typhoon known as Cobra) which I have researched since seeing the film. I would recommned this to anyone interested in great films and I am sure this must appear on many of those X number of fims you must see lists. The story is great, the filming is great but what really does it is the acting. Van Johnson, I think, stole the picture. Fred MacMurray was great as well. I love seeing him in anything different from his My Three Sons role which growing up in the 60's was how I first was introduced to him. When I saw Double Idemnity for the first time....well mind blown will suffice. Another stand out was Robert Francis who I had never seen in a film before. WHat a tragic loss with his passing at 25 years of age. You may have noticed I left out the two characters who get the most recoognition for this film, Jose Ferrer and Humphrey Bogart. They have received, rightfully so, plenty of accolades and they are great. But dont see the film for them. See if for Johnson, MacMurray and Francis. You will not be disappointed.
