A young woman Kerstin Norbäck goes to Stockholm to flee the notoriety of a shooting in which she was a victim and works in a pharmacy until the past starts catching up with her. Kerstin is played by Ingrid Bergman and she is splendid. One can't take one's eyes off her, not just because she is beautiful but with a look, a gesture, a smile, a frown etc she suggests all kinds of depths. It is a soap opera story and the ending where Kerstin goes off with a man she only really talked to once is a bit unbelievable but doesn't spoil the film.

The film is enhanced by the three women who become Kerstin's friends, Nickan, Jane and Åsa. The latter played by Marianne Löfgren is particularly effective both in her romantic and dramatic scenes. In the film there is a frankness about sexuality that is most un-Hollywood for 1940 but in this Swedish movie it makes the characters seem more real. An entertaining watch with a good cast and interesting characters.

It makes you want to go to Sweden and experience the 'June night' the film describes.
