There's no debating that '1917' is a groundbreaking piece of cinema. With the entire film consisting of only one continuous, uncut scene, it makes for impressive viewing. It will no doubt be remembered for its innovation and breathtaking cinematography.
But while '1917' excels in the visuals category, I was left disappointed overall. The problem with creating such a visual feast is that people end up more interested in how the film looks rather than what actually happens it in. It felt like the plot was complementing the visuals a lot of the time rather than the other way round.
While '1917' looks fantastic and is well acted and produced, the story failed to grip me, there wasn't enough character development, and there was a serious lack of emotion for a war film.
