Absolutely Fabulous (1992–2012)

PC or Not PC? Who Cares? Just watch and enjoy.

Ab Fab is one of my absolute all time favourite comedy shows made by, and featuring two comediennes that have since become legends.

Jennifer Saunders has created far more than a conventional comedy, believe it or not its something of a slice of life.

Not my life certainly but it is about real larger than life people, living their somewhat excentric existences.

For those of us that live out our ordinary run of the mill lives, 'Celebrity' may as well be a swear word.

They bare absolutely no relationship to my existence, and I really can't give a monkeys about who's knocking off who.

I have no knowledge or interest in 'Style' or 'Fashion' nor anything or anyone related to the entire Plastic World.

But that 'World' is an entire self contained bubble populated by, self important parasites with monumental egos.

I appreciate that I am rather labouring the point but I think it is important, to fully understand the characters, that Jennifer Saunders has created.

Throughout the shows entirety we discovered something more, of the actual identity of what amounts to an extended family.

Edina and Patsy are products of a particular time, that becomes apparent from subsequent episodes.

We learn about what has helped shaped them, into the monsters we still enjoy laughing at and with.

From all this we can better hope to appreciate some of Saffron's psychosis, and possibly her future lifestyle choices.

Us the viewers get a grandstand seat to an hysterically funny and painfully personal, view of an incredibly dysfunctional extended family.

'Celebrity' and 'Celebrities' are mercilessly lampooned and ridiculed, for all they are not worth it.

Absolutely Fabulous as a TV comedy is also very much of its time yes and place, just a glimpse at the different versions highlighted this to me perfectly.

Given the way times have changed since the shows broadcast, I can't help having the depressing thought that Ab Fab could not or would not be made today.

Because of a term that may not have been invented in the USA but was certainly made popular there, 'Political Correctness'.

It was circulated by a right wing American female journalist who started using the term to discredit, anything remotely related to civil rights.

This was deliberately linked to anyone on the left, who sought to defend them. PC (Political Correctness) has been developed into a club more than a stick, with which to beat the left to death.

For me one of the worst aspects of all this is those on the left, who prefer to to be mealy mouthed about it.

When those professing to be of the left use 'PC' terms it really annoys me, and helps remind me why I never use the term in everyday conversations.

All this preamble is my way of saying why I really feel Ab Fab, would never even be considered as an idea for a comedy show.

There are I think people who love to be annoyed for other people, who enjoy being "disgusted of Tumbridge Wells".

Straight people who nonetheless feel impelled to voice indignation, on behalf of gays everywhere.

So there are undoubtedly innumerable folks who will be 'offended and disgusted', by any number of 'Issues' apparently raised in and by Ab Fab.

I don't ever wish to patronise anybody and in my everyday life, I go out of my way to avoid it.

But the more guff I hear around what is or may be 'PC' the more, I am really chuffed to have been born when I was in 1948.

I still retain the same outlook towards comedy its incredibly straightforward, if I find something funny then I laugh.

If I don't then I won't, that's it nothing more nor less, as complicated as it gets.

I really feel sorry for those who seem to wish to take out the joy out of life, by insisting on running comedy through some form of 'Taste Filter'.

I had erroneously imagined that the Official Censor had been retired long since but is it just deja vu?

That now in the 21st century of the Christian calendar, I have those queuing up to Censor what I can laugh at or be offended by.

I can no longer choose from these options myself, instead I am supposed to allow some other pillocks to do this for me.

Frankly stuff that for a game of soldiers, that's an English expression which means that I don't give a monkeys.

For me that's enough said, don't think about it just watch Absolutely Fabulous, and enjoy it.
