Let's face it, this show is not going to win any Emmys...heck I wouldn't even give it an 8/10 rating but the thing is It's really not as bad as everyone is making it out to be!
Most of the reviews are from angry fans who didn't even bother sitting through the whole series because they are upset by the aesthetic, casting among other choices.
To those people I say "I hear you" hey, I'm even latina and the only latina girl in the group isn't present in the show! But the truth is, you are not judging this series for what it is! You are judging it for what you want it to be! And I'm sorry to break it to you but this isn't the Winx club cartoon.
For starters (and At the risk of sounding like a boomer) you should really rewatch the original cartoon, I can assure you it isn't nearly as entertaining as you remember it to be (I know I rewatched the first to seasons a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't get through the third one) somethings are better left in the past, were they belong. Winx club was a kids show and as that it served it's purpose, entertaining little girls ALL OVER THE WORLD.
No one can take that away from you! If you love the original series then go back and rewatch it as many times as you'd like...it isn't going anywhere!
I hate the thought that live action adaptations have to be identical to the source material to be good (and believe me when I say I've seen my fair share of "gritty" live action adaptations that suck), the only thing this does is destroy creativity.
How do you think the Marvel cinematic universe has come so far? By copying and pasting what's already been done in the comics? No, by changing things up, updating this stories for new generations.
Now that that's done I will continue to say what my real problems with this are. In the first place, the ONLY casting decision I do not condone is Musa, since they really don't give a reason as to why she isn't Asian. Terra was fine by me and this was NOT withewashing Flora because SHE ISNT FLORA. Likewise I dislike the fact that they didn't even give a mention to my girl Tecna but we shall see what they do about that in following seasons.
It has some cliches for sure but I wasn't bored for a second and binged the hell out of it! One of the things I enjoyed so much is the fact that I didn't know what was going to happen because the show follows an original story arc.
The set design is really good, even though the costume design (with the exception of Stella) is pretty lame. I thought the actors did a good job and FOR THE MOST PART the script was organic.
To close this rant I would like to say to all those angry fans "You NEED to calm down" it's just a show, a show that may I add didn't market itself to be anything other than what it is, a YA adaptation of the Winx club. Bashing the series will not achieve anything or well it will, it will damage this property and turn it into Hollywood poison.
Ask yourselves if that is really what you want. To cancel a show that so many people are enjoying for what it is and not for what it isn't. Give it a try! Don't go into it hoping to see the Winx club cartoon because that is not what this is.
The core theme of this property has always been friendship and I find that is very beautifully represented here, in a more realistic way than the cartoon may I add. So let's be friends and let everyone enjoy things! Don't ruin the party for everybody.
