Tonight's movie review is the murder mystery set in Jamaica - The Mighty Quinn (1989) where a homicide is investigated by the local police chief played by my man Denzel Washington as Xavier Quinn who is in the search of the prime suspect who happens to be his childhood friend, the carefree drifter Maubee. Soon the investigation turns out to be more complicated than it appears.

Denzel's portrayal of a cool-headed chief of police who goes above and beyond in the investigation and literally doesn't take any crap from anyone including corrupt officials in order to prove his friend's innocence makes the film intriguing and compelling. Along with investigating the mystery of who the guilty party makes this movie surprising well directed in the small length of time and for a low budget picture drama, this movie sure puts a big budget film to shame.

Denzel's chilled off-beat humour and handling the accent along with the well performances by his co-starts excels the movie in an unexpected way which proves that a movie doesn't have to be successful with a huge budget but rather having the correct ingredients make a film compelling.

The movie is enriched with cool colourful vibes and has a real Caribbean cultural feel including banging out the reggae music played in the film from the start till the end is awesome. The movie premise is simple while also providing thrills and straightforward entertainment where the main character is all caught up in a plot that will eventually get in way over his head. The film did not disappoint, great soundtrack and an awesome cinematography - The Mighty Quinn entertained at every level, overall 7.7/10.
