Ok, let's get some things straight. I didn't grow up with Garfield. I didn't get the comics or the older cartoon as an adult either. Even right now I'm not sure why this is a popular franchise.
So I had no expectations going into this. I was disappointed anyway. The show is simultaneously too weird and completely generic.
The episodes are all over the place. Aliens, pirates, ghosts, science fiction. Many episodes use silly gimmicks that barely make sense like having a story within a story or weird homages the kids wouldn't get. Some episodes try (and fail) at emotional sincerity. Garfield is more of a mascot than a character in this show, so many episodes are barely related to him. Breaking the 4th wall is not in itself funny.
The animation is pretty bad. The character designs are really unflattering in 3d.
If you're in dire need of a TV show with talking animals to calm your kids down I guess it gets the job done.
