Depressing non-comedy for Hanks.
21 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was released when Tom Hanks was THE up and coming comedy star that everyone wanted to see onscreen. And I do recall some humorous moments early on in this film. But that was about it for the comedy in this sad, sad movie.

I guess what upset me while I sat in the theater after paying to see 'Nothing in Common' - was that it was advertised as a 'comedy'. It's not. Duped again! The gist of the story -about Hanks reconnecting with his aging, womanizing father(Jackie Gleason) is so depressing that it weighs down the entire movie.

Take, for example, the scene where Hanks' father is coldly discharged from his longtime job with an abrupt, "You're fired, Max." Hilarious! Or the sight of the father eating a tv dinner alone as pigeons flap their greasy wings on the windowsill outside his rundown apartment building. Depressing, depressing.

If you need to see 'funny' Tom Hanks, watch something else - like 'Bachelor Party'. 'Funny' Jackie Gleason? Old 'Honeymooners' episodes.
