Review of Ghajini

Ghajini (2008)
6/10
I liked it until I learnt it's a remake... of a remake!

My sister was a huge fan of Aamir Khan as a kid. This is the reason why we would watch all his films. So when Ghajini came we all watched it. I learnt a lot about filmmaking because of this film - unreliable and non linear storytelling, suspense, romantic thriller, non-conventional action etc. This is the reason why I wouldn't completely trash this film like I do to other remakes. Memento is pretty cool and Christopher Nolan is my favourite director after Zack Snyder, so no disrespect to him.

The story and concept are stolen, so I won't judge this film on that. The acting and songs are absolutely dope. The cinematography, however, is pathetic. As a kid I really liked this film and felt like an adult for understanding it. I found it very annoying when someone said that Aamir Khan's name was Ghajini in this film. I think it's a huge lesson about naming your film after the bad guy.

I think I would have been better off not knowing this film is a remake, because that ruined the mood for me. All those scenes where he put guns and wallet in labelled drawers: all that interesting stuff just went down the drain. It's sad that this is the first Bollywood film to gross a billion rupees. It pretty much summed up what Bollywood will become in the upcoming years.
