If you like the music of James Brown, and you like the acting of Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer, you will enjoy this film. The performances are all excellent, including the sidemen in the band and the women in his life. You see both his talent and his faults and his pain in childhood as well as adulthood.
The only criticism I have is the editing and the director who approved the final cut. It has a nonlinear narrative which might have been ok but the editing is so choppy that it really mars the film. I would use this in a film class as an example of bad editing so that people can see the importance of editing. Bad editing reduces a great film to a not so great film.
