Improvisational Meta-filmmaking
18 October 2021
Parker Posey and Sabrina Lloyd play two actresses (themselves), in a series of sequences that are structured as out-takes from a film. Shots are interrupted almost immediately by the actress breaking character, or the unseen director interjecting. The plot and dialogue (heavily improvised, both actresses are credited as writers) suggest they are trying to make a typical Hal Hartley New York film, with many repeated deadpan phrases, which seem like they might be punchlines, if only the audience could get the full scene. Equal parts fascinating and frustrating, but definitely worth it for fans of Hartley or Parker Posey, who is excellent as always.
