A Interesting Piece, early Chevalier and Jeannette MacDonald

I had to think about it awhile, before I decided I like this film. The reason is that it had beautiful performances, and an interesting breaking of the fourth wall talking to the audience in singing/rhyme, and a comedic, lighthearted sense about it. It's creative, tight and well driven plot. Chevalier and Macdonald have a great chemistry as in love Husband and wife and a great, fun, relationship!

But the theme is about marriage and how others can come between two people. It's about temptations, distractions, faithfulness and unfaithfulness. A lovely committed couple, Macdonald and Chevalier have such a beautiful joy and love for each other. An unhappy best friend of the wife comes on to Chevalier 3x and then he succumbs. While the film is light (except that Macdonald provides a beautiful performance when she knows that someone is having an affair, but then finds out it is her Husband.) Instead of it being gossip, it's now about her own marriage. The change in her and Chevalier is remarkable and authentic and quite sad. Their marriage, could, end right there. All that joy goes right out the window. The good news is Chevalier is honest with her.

She was also tempted to be with another man when she suspected he was with another woman, but she eventually said no to the man.

In the end, and in song, they make up. Chevalier says "How could I resist? Could you?" in a lighthearted way. He and his wife make up and they encourage couples to stay together and not judge each other for this discrepancy and unfaithfulness (once? Twice? Always? It's not clear). So they sing positively about you should stay together.

It's hard to see a lighthearted film about a tough subject. And it is one way to approach it -- joyfully keep moving on and don't worry too much about temptations.

It was just hard to see another woman pursue a married man, very happily married, and almost wreck it. And perhaps it was a little hard to hear all the positive songs as they went through these temptations.

But, the film is beautifully done. A clear plot, beautiful time period and dress, a great chemistry with Macdonald and Chevalier, creative use of the 4th wall, and a lot of joy and comedy. It's just the dark subject is underneath, all the time. As much as it is a comedy, I found it very real life. So to me it was a comedy and a drama. Movies are never classified that way, and they should and can be.

I'd recommend seeing it. It's a very creative and well done film!
