6/10
Obvious but still unsettling
3 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Even if you are unfamiliar with this particular Agatha Christie story, to say that the warning signals that the heroine should have taken into account much earlier are blatantly obvious would be an understatement; him nearly snapping her arm off for daring to touch his hair should ring the first bell loudly, and surely him digging a grave (!) in their cellar should ring the second. Nonetheless, the film manages to be tense and even unsettling, because the terror is more intimate than usual for Agatha Christie - and for the most part there is no reassuring authority figure to "set things straight". Sylvia Sidney puts in a very sincere performance (even if her character is frustratingly thick until the end), and John Hodiak is effectively creepy and sinister. **1/2 out of 4.
