Task Force (1949)
6/10
A good WWII film with great acting , but with too much use of combat stock footage

Attractive movie dealing with history of naval aviation and the development of the aircraft carrier. As he is retiring , Rear Admiral Jonathon Scott - Gary Cooper giving his usual sincere and solid acting- in a long flashback tells the development of the important role of the aircraft carrier from the early 20s . After World War I, there was a general downsizing of the military . There were only limited opportunities to create a carrier-bound air capability . Over the years however, Scott is one of several men who pursue their dream of aircraft carriers and planes specifically designed for that purpose . Cooper and his buddies attempt to convince the brass that planes can be landed on the decks of ships . Slowly the Navy goes ahead and when Pearl Harbor is attacked , Cooper is given command of his own aircraft carrier . Their worth is proved in World War II at the Battle of Midway and throughout the war with several bloody battles. As the use of the carries proved very effective in Pacific battles and Cooper is eventually vindicated . Nothing ever like it ! Nothing you ever liked more !

A typically splashy Warner Bros biopic from the Fifties with drama , tension and a lot of aerial combats . A propaganda piece put together by great professionals as director/writer Delmer Daves and screenwriters as Ranald MacDougall . The film is pretty well , being decently made and with a fine main and support cast . The film depicts the long history of the aircrafts and carriers , as at the beginning they were not designed specifically for landing on a flat top and several death occur during training . Jonathan L. Scott/Gary Cooper reflects on his character in introducing aircraft carriers to the U. S. Navy along a difficul career well developed through this acceptable WWII movie . However , being marred by excessive and actual combat in black and white , and addding Technicolor newsreel footage to spice up the impact . Highlighted by the great acting from Gary Cooper who reminisces perfectly about the long Navy career his role . While Jane Wyatt is enjoyable and delightful as the widow he eventually marries and acts well too . Support cast looks terrific as well, with plenty of familiar sendaries from the Forties and Fifties , such as : Walter Brennan, Wayne Morris , Moroni Olsen , Julie London , Bruce Bennett , Jack Holt , Stanley Ridges, John Ridgely , Gregg Barton, Douglas Kennedy , Edmond O'Brien , among others .

It contains an atmospheric and evocative cinematography in Black and While by Robert Burks and Wilfrid Cline . As well as moving and thrilling musical score by Franz Waxman . Very well produced by Jerry Wald , the motion picture was competent and professionally directed by Delmer Daves . This craftsman was a good filmmaker who directed all kinds of genres , outstanding in Western and Film Noir , though also made notorious romantic dramas , and warfare movies , such as : Pride of the Marines or Forever in love , Destination Tokyo , Dark Passage , The Red House , Never let me go , The Last Wagon , Jubal, 3.10 to Yuma , Cowboy , The Badlanders , Demetrius and the Gladiators, Kings Go Forth , The Battle of the Villa Fiorita. Rating : 6.5/10 . The picture will appeal to Gary Cooper fans and Wartime genre aficionados. Worthwhile watching .
